How to use the Volumetric Weight Calculator

If you sell large, lightweight items (like pillows, lampshades, or bulky clothing), you have probably been severely impacted by "Volumetric Weight" charges from couriers like DHL, FedEx, or UPS. Our free calculator helps you predict exactly what your billable weight will be before you ship.

The Volumetric Formula Explained

Couriers charge based on the space a package takes up in their airplane, not just how heavy it is. They calculate a theoretical weight based on the dimensions, and charge you the higher of the two weights (Actual vs. Volumetric).

Volumetric Weight = (Length × Width × Height in cm) ÷ Courier Divisor

  • Divisor 5000: The industry standard for standard international air freight. (1 CBM = 200kg)
  • Divisor 4000: Often used by express parcel couriers (DHL Express, TNT). This yields a higher volumetric weight, meaning you pay more for bulky items. (1 CBM = 250kg)
  • Divisor 6000: Usually reserved for domestic ground shipping or specific economic freight networks. (1 CBM = 167kg)

Why CBM matters

CBM (Cubic Meters) is the standard measurement for sea freight. If you are importing goods via ocean freight (LCL or FCL), your freight forwarder will charge you primarily based on the total CBM of your shipment.
